The species-substitution problem in botanical products
The quietest quality problem in the botanical market isn't contamination or potency — it's identity. Trade names like "sea moss," "cinnamon," "skullcap," or "ginseng" each cover multiple distinct species with different chemistry, and commerce routinely substitutes one for another without the label changing. Sometimes it's an industry-acknowledged convention; sometimes it's adulteration. Either way, the buyer usually can't tell.
How one name comes to cover many plants
Trade names are older, looser, and more commercial than taxonomy. "Sea moss" products overwhelmingly contain farmed warm-water Kappaphycus alvarezii labeled with the reputation of cold-water Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) — a different alga with a different profile. Most "cinnamon" on grocery shelves is cassia (Cinnamomum cassia), not Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) — a distinction that matters because cassia carries substantially more coumarin. "Ginseng" spans Panax species with different traditions, plus so-called ginsengs that aren't Panax at all.

Why substitution persists
The economics are simple: the reputation attaches to the name, the cost attaches to the species. When a cheaper, faster-growing, or more available species can wear an established name, margin pressure does the rest. Add genuinely confusing taxonomy, supply chains with many hands, and testing that most buyers never request — and substitution becomes the default state of parts of the market, not the exception.
What actually resolves identity
Identity is an analytical question, and it has analytical answers:
- The full scientific name on the label AND on the certificate of analysis — a trade name alone resolves nothing.
- Identity testing named on the COA: botanical microscopy, HPTLC fingerprinting, or DNA methods, depending on the material.
- Marker-compound profiles consistent with the claimed species — the chemistry should match the plant.
- A supplier who can answer "which species, which plant part, which origin?" without hesitation.
