Which species is “Sarsaparilla”?
“Sarsaparilla” is a multi-species muddle: New World Smilax species behind the root-beer/tonic tradition, and the distinct Chinese article tu fu ling (Smilax glabra) — plus historic conflation with unrelated plants (Indian “sarsaparilla” is Hemidesmus, not Smilax).

- Chinese-medicine formulas naming tu fu ling mean S. glabra specifically — Western sarsaparilla root is not a like-for-like article.
- “Indian sarsaparilla” on a label usually means Hemidesmus indicus — a different family entirely; the binomial is everything in this category.
