The economics of botanical adulteration — and why testing is the only fix
Botanical adulteration has a formal name in the quality literature — economically motivated adulteration — because that's what it is: not sloppiness, but a business model. Understanding the incentive structure explains why the problem never fully goes away, and why documentation beats reputation every time.
The incentive structure
Every popular botanical creates the same gradient: demand attaches to a name, supply of the authentic material is constrained (slow-growing roots, wild harvest limits, regional crops), and a cheaper lookalike exists — a related species, an exhausted-marc extract, or a spiked material engineered to pass a naive test. Wherever that gradient exists and testing is rare, substitution flows downhill.
The pattern repeats across the market's history: expensive roots cut with related species, oils diluted with cheaper carriers, extracts "fortified" with synthesized marker compounds so a single-marker test reads clean while the actual botanical is absent.
Why single-marker testing gets fooled
If a buyer only tests for one marker compound, an adulterator only needs to supply that one compound. This is why serious identity work uses methods that read the whole material — chromatographic fingerprints compared against authenticated reference standards, microscopy of the actual plant tissue, or DNA methods where appropriate — rather than a single number that can be spiked.
What a defensible chain looks like
The botanical industry's own quality programs converge on the same short list: authenticated reference materials, identity testing on every lot, suppliers qualified by audit rather than by brochure, and documentation that travels with the material. None of it is exotic — it's just cost, which is exactly the point. Authentication is what separates products competing on quality from products competing on the absence of scrutiny.
